Throughout the history of education the most common means of maintaining discipline in schools was corporal punishment. While a child was at school, a teacher was expected to act as a parent, with the same means of making children obey as the parents had. This often meant that school students were often punished with a cane if they did something wrong. Corporal punishment at schools has now disappeared from all European countries. Thirty-one US states have banned it, but the other nineteen states (mostly in the South) continue to allow corporal punishment in schools. Teachers have the right to apply corporal punishment, although many choose not to do so. Official corporal punishment, often by caning, remains commonplace in schools in some Asian, African and Caribbean countries. Generally speaking, most countries retain punishment for misbehavior, but it usually takes non-corporal forms such as detention after the lessons. In Russia corporal punishment in schools was banned in 1863.

It is higher and steeper than a hill. Mountains must be higher than 600 metres. They consist of rocks and earth. They usually have steep, sloping sides. They also have sharp or slightly rounded peaks. Some mountains may have trees which grow on their sides. Very high mountains may have snow on their peaks. Long chains or groups of mountains are mountain ranges. They can be short or very long. A group of these makes a mountain system. Mountains exist on every continent of our planet and even beneath the ocean. In fact, some of the highest mountains are at the bottom of the sea. For example, Hawaii is at the top of a volcanic mountain in the Pacific Ocean. More than half the mountain is below water. 75% of the world’s countries have mountains.

At first, medicine was rather an art than science. It was little based on skills and knowledge but, instead, it had connections to the religious beliefs. At the early stages of medicine, doctors relied on religious rituals in the same way as on medication. For example, a medicine man would apply herbs and say prayers for healing. The first physicians thought that bloodletting was the best treatment of all. In recent centuries, since the advent of science, most medicine has become a combination of art and science. Much depends on the talent of the doctor and on the efficiency of drugs and surgery. Nowadays, we come to understand more and more about our body and to know what is going on inside the cells. Also, genetic engineering opens up new perspectives for treating inherited diseases. And, of course, new medical technologies have already saves millions of lives.

Asia is the most populated continent, with its 4.3 billion inhabitants. This accounts for 60% of the worlds population. The two most populated countries of the world are China and India. These countries together constitute about 37% of the whole population of our planet. Africa is the second most populated continent. It is home for about one billion people. This makes 15% of the world’s population. Europe has 733 million people and this makes up 12%. Latin American and Caribbean regions are home to around 600 million people (9 %). Northern America, primarily consisting of the United States and Canada, has a population of around 352 million (5%), and Oceania, the least populated region, has about 35 million inhabitants (0.5%). What about Antarctica? Though it is not permanently inhabited by anybody, Antarctica has a small, changing international population, living in polar science stations.

It is a board much like a surfboard. It is made of plastic or fiberglass. A mast, or vertical pole, stands in the center of the board. The sail is hooked to the mast. There is a plastic window in the sail, so that the surfer can see where the board is going. The surfer keeps his or her balance and steers by holding onto a boom. The boom is a horizontal bar that is attached to the sail. The surfer lifts the sail out of the water with a rope that is attached to the boom. There have been many arguments over who first invented the sailboard. In 1982, a court ruled out that a 12-year-old British boy had made the first sailboard in 1958. This sport first became popular in Europe in the 1970s. Funboarding is a special kind of windsurfing. Funboards were designed to be used in strong winds. It is a popular sport in Hawaii.

Nature is in more trouble now than ever before in human history. More than 1 million species are on the brink of extinction. And species loss is happening hundreds of times faster than it did in the past. All of that is according to a new report from the United Nations. It is the first U.N. report to take an in-depth look at the health of the Earth’s plant and animal species. The report was compiled by more than 450 researchers. They used 15,000 scientific and government studies to create it. A summary was released today, and the full 1,500-page report will be released later this year. According to the report, the greatest threat to plants and animals is habitat loss. This happens when humans use land and water for purposes such as farming, fishing, and building cities. Three-quarters of Earth’s landbased environment has been significantly altered by human actions.

Early in the morning, Evenki natives in the hills northwest of Lake Baikal observed a column of blue light. It was nearly as bright as the Sun, and it was moving across the sky. About ten minutes later, there was a flash and a sound similar to artillery fire. Eyewitnesses reported that the source of the sound was moving from the east to the north following the movement of the blue light. The sound was accompanied by a shock wave that knocked people off their feet and broke windows in the houses hundreds of kilometres away. As it often happens, eyewitnesses’ accounts varied regarding the sequence and duration of the events. On that day the legendary Tungus meteorite or a small comet fell on the Earth near the river called Podkamennaya Tunguska in Siberia. It happened at about seven o’clock in the morning, on the 30th of June 1908. The first expedition came to the site only ten years later.

When you look at a coffee bean, it’s really hard to believe that such a small thing is so important for so many people. Coffee is the world’s second most traded thing. It is by all means one of the most popular drinks ever. Statistics says that the major part of the planet population drink coffee. Some prefer black coffee, that is coffee served without milk. Others like white coffee — coffee with milk. However, few people know enough about coffee beans. First of all, coffee beans are actually not beans. They are the pits of a fruit. In fact, coffee comes from coffee cherries and they are only called beans because they look a bit like other beans. Secondly, most of the world’s coffee comes from one country. Brazil is by far the largest producer of coffee in the world selling nearly a third of all the coffee drunk in the world.

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the most popular museums in the United States. Located in New York City, it was founded in 1869. Visitors from around the world go to see its vast collection of dinosaur fossils and explore the solar system in its planetarium. This year, the museum marked its 150th anniversary. Now, construction has begun on its new education centre. The Centre will be home to several innovative exhibits. One will be called the Collections Core. It will display 4 million scientific specimens. The Insectarium will be dedicated to insects. The Butterfly Vivarium will house living butterflies. The Centre will feature classrooms, a library, and an immersive theatre to help visitors imagine scientific ideas. The Centre will allow The Museum to better serve young visitors. The museum will become a place of joy and exploration for children around the world.

Brushing teeth is a good habit which is common to people all over the world. This habit has been developing since 3000 B.C., when people used twigs for brushing their teeth. Modern toothbrushing dates back to 1770, when a modern tooth brush was invented by William Addis. William Addis lived in England and was in prison for causing a riot when he made his invention. He was watching a guard sweep the floor with a broom and wondered if the same principle could be used for brushing teeth. He kept a small lamb bone from his lunch, drilled some holes in it and pulled some pig bristles through them. When William Addis was released, he started a toothbrush business and became rich. After his death, his business remained in his family for almost 200 years. The company still exists in the UK and produces 70 million toothbrushes per year!
