It is not easy to give a clear definition of extreme sports because in many aspects they resemble traditional sports. Both require physical strength and a lot of practice. Yet, there are differences that can be easily seen. The first one is that most extreme sports usually take place outdoors, in a natural environment. It can be a river, an ocean, a mountain, or a country road. It is difficult, and sometimes even impossible, to predict and control the natural forces like snow, waves, rain, or wind. Turning to the history of extreme sports, the first examples of risky activities like parachute jumping occurred back in the 16th century and we have the 17th century sketch designs of the first roller skates (which was an extreme sport then). Still many sports historians agree that the history of extreme sports begins in the middle of the nineteenth century. Later in the 1970s the Dangerous Sports Club was founded in Oxford University. Its members are famous for inventing bungee jumping. The first jump was made on the 1st of April in 1979 from the Suspension Bridge in Bristol. The club also started the tradition of extreme skiing in the Alps. Since then, many new extreme sports have appeared. For instance, motorbiking was invented in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century and quickly spread all over the world. It became very popular in the 1970s. It was the time when many young men took part in motor crosses and started biking across mountain slopes and in national parks. People continue to challenge nature using their inventions. Another vivid example is skydiving. Sportsmen doing this sport jump out of an aeroplane and perform acrobatic movements. Many people don’t consider skydiving to be a sport. They think that it is more of an entertainment. However, jumpers must be physically fit, practise and learn a lot of theory before they jump. 1.
