Задание 9

Read the text and put the sentences into the correct category. How It All Began A lot of Russian cities have Kremlins. We can see them in Pskov, Novgorod, Tula, Smolensk and in many other places. But the Moscow Kremlin stands out from them. People think that Moscow began in 1147. It was the year when Prince Yury Dolgoruky of Suzdal sent Prince Svyatoslav a letter. He wrote, “Come to me, my brother, to Moskovy.” In those days all the buildings were on the territory of the Kremlin. It stood high on the bank of the Moskva River. To defend Moscow from the enemies they built the first wooden wall around the Kremlin. The city grew very fast and soon new houses appeared behind the Kremlin wall, but the Kremlin was still the most important place in Moscow. In the 14th century they built the first stone churches and cathedrals in the Kremlin. Later Dmitry Donskoi decided to build a strong wall of white stone and tall white towers around it. After that people began to speak about ‘white-walled Moscow’. By and by Moscow was becoming a fairly important city of Russia. The Russian tsars wanted to show their power and riches. So they started rebuilding the Kremlin again. They invited the best architects from Italy. Together with Russian builders they turned the Kremlin into one of the most beautiful places in the world.

For this reason, it is believed by some to be one of the most haunted capital cities in the world. There are hundreds of stories of ghosts in old buildings, parks, streets, graveyards and even theatres and tube stations! If you aren’t too afraid, read on... From Medieval times to the early 20th century, the Tower of London has had a long, cruel history of imprisonment, trials, executions and torture. It’s no wonder then thatof ghosts are a common occurrence here! One of the most frequentlyghosts is the headless Anne Boleyn, the unlucky wife of Henry VIII who was beheaded at the Tower in 1536. There is also ‘the white lady’, whose perfumeto fill the air surrounding the White Tower and who was once spotted waving to a group of children visiting the opposite building. Stories of ghostly goings-on at the Tower of London are numerous and still occur today. London’s theatre firstits curtains to the public in 1663 and is therefore London’s oldest working theatre. Many phantoms supposedly make their presence felt during the performances here. Some say that Joseph Grimaldi, a mischievous clown who died in 1837, often kicks actors, ushers and cleaners from behind as they work! Another clown, Dan Leno, who was famoushis clog dance, can sometimespractising his routine over and over again. The theatre’s most famous ghost, however, is the ‘Man in Grey’, who only appears at the beginning of a successful performance. Unlike most ghosts, he does not make people freeze in terror and is seen as a welcome addition to the theatre!
