School on the railway platform, India In 1985, Inderjit Khurana, a school teacher from the Indian city of Orissa, decided that it was time to fight illiteracy and set up the Ruchika School Social Service Organization (RSSO). This organization was built the world’s first school on the railway platform. Thanks to this school, more than 4,000 Indian children were educated. The system works very simply – homeless children and children from low-income families are picked up at stations, and then taught to read and write.
