In 1883, Krakatoa woke up after being dormant for about 200 years and exploded with a strength of 13,000 times the power of an atomic bomb. The huge explosion was so powerful, that it was heard as far as central Australia. It sent out poisonous gases, pumice, rocks, smoke and hot ash 20 miles up into the air, which spread for thousands of miles and reached the islands on the east coast of Africa.
